Netflix will not release Ezra Edelman’s new documentary about the beloved musician Prince, who died at 57 in 2016. The Hollywood Reporter says the decision comes amid a new deal with the estate of the Purple Rain creator and pop sensation. A joint statement about the decision read, “The Prince Estate and Netflix have come to a mutual agreement that will allow the estate to develop and produce a new documentary featuring exclusive content from Prince’s archive. As a result, the Netflix documentary will not be released.” Last September, The New York Times revealed that the reportedly nine-hour documentary would accuse Prince of emotional and physical abuse. Former romantic partners Jill Jones, Susannah Melvoin, and Mayte Garcia all reportedly made allegations against Prince. Primary Wave Music and Prince Legacy, which have connections with Prince assets, said, “We are working to resolve matters concerning the documentary so that [Prince’s] story may be told in a way that is factually correct and does not mischaracterize or sensationalize his life.”
